Description

The Forest Preserve and Conservation (FPC) Section consists of professionals that either specialize or work in and around forest preserves and/or conservation. This event will begin with a Forest Preserve & Conservation Section meeting followed by a Learning Lab titled "Woody Invaders: Duel to the Death." The event will conclude with the Section's annual Social.  If you are interested in joining the committee or simply wish to attend for educational and networking purposes, you are encouraged to register.

2:00pm:  Welcome and Introduction (Ralph Schultz and Angie Trobaugh)
2:10pm:  Section Meeting
2:30pm:  Section Awards (four awards will be given)
2:45pm:  Woody Invaders: Duel to the Death
3:15pm:  Explore Hidden Oaks Nature Center and Preserve/Social

Presentation Description:  Juli Mason, Restoration Program Coordinator for the Forest Preserve District of Will County, will provide an overview of management techniques to address invasive shrubs and trees.  In particular, she will contrast the pros and cons of cut stump and basal bark treatment methods.  Spoiler alert: while dueling to the death at high noon is theatrical and makes for good movies, it's not an effective way to address a landscape of woody invaders.  Basal bark treatments don't deliver instant gratification (or theatrical satisfaction), but they are more effective and cost efficient than traditional cut stump treatments.
