Therapeutic Recreation Section Breakfast & Education

Thursday, December 14, 2023 (9:00 AM - 11:30 AM) (CST)

Description

IPRA's Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Section consists of park district professionals that either specialize or work in and around special recreation agencies. This event will begin with a catered breakfast followed by a presentation by Tiffany Olson titled "Listen Like You Mean It."  Immediately following the presentation, the TR Section will hold a Section Board Meeting.  The section meeting will mainly consist of reports from the Section Board and each committee Chair, and an IPRA liaison will be in attendance to provide updates to the membership about news and events happening within the association.  If you are interested in joining the section or simply wish to attend for educational and networking purposes, you are encouraged to register.

Timeline:
9:00 - 9:30am: Breakfast
9:30 - 11:00am: "Listen Like You Mean It” by Tiffany Olson
11:00am: TR Section Board Meeting

Session Description:  Today’s workplace is a hurried one. We are in almost constant communication with our coworkers. From 1:1 meetings to team meetings, to phone calls to Zoom calls, from face-to-face chats to text messaging, to emails and he said/she said confusion: that’s an overwhelming level of communication. And the problem is that much of it is ineffective. So, what’s causing this breakdown? Is it stubbornness, laziness, being easily distracted, or something else?  With this workshop, Communication Coach, Tiffany Olson, will answer those questions by identifying the difference between hearing and active listening, and by describing the stages of the listening process. She will help participants identify areas where that process breaks down, and help them gain insights into their own strengths and weaknesses. Participants will be equipped with practical tools and exercises to be a better listener and level up their communication skills.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Participants will learn why we should listen well, and have an understanding of what the stages of the listening process are.
2.  Participants will be able to identify typical listening pitfalls and understand the difference between "hearing" and "active listening."
3.  At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be equipped with verbal and nonverbal skills to promote active and effective listening.

Virtual Attendance Option:  This event will also be shared on Zoom.  Links will be sent out to all registrants December 13.
