Session Description: Mental health has been discussed more openly in the last decade reducing stigmas and increasing access to supportive services. Often those that are neurodivergent have not historically been included in supportive services and data around mental health needs. The shift in mental health to include dual diagnoses has been growing yet we still have so much to learn about appropriate supports within our community. Moving away from the deficit medical model and understanding the social model of disability is crucial to supporting those at are neurodivergent and navigating mental health needs. Support comes from a variety of sources outside of traditional therapy and direct staff are crucial to the well-being and mental health of those that are neurodivergent.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define neurodiversity and co-morbidity of mental health including statistical rates.
2. Discuss presentation of mental health diagnoses within neurodivergent populations.
3. Provide case consultation on specifics as they relate to supporting those with dual diagnoses.
