Web Accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act

Web Accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act
Wednesday, March 12, 2025 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (CDT)
Description
IPRA's Communications & Marketing (C&M) Section consists of park district professionals that either specialize or work in and around marketing, communications, graphic design, and sponsorship. This event will feature a presentation of "Web Accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act." If you are interested in joining the section or simply wish to attend for educational and networking purposes, you are encouraged to attend.
Session Description: Inaccessible web content means community members with disabilities may be denied equal access to park and recreation information. An inaccessible website can exclude community members just like the poor design of a facility. In the last couple of years, ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities has been a priority for the federal government and the State of Illinois. Park and recreation agencies must learn how these barriers on the web can keep community members with disabilities from accessing program information and how they can be prevented or removed.
Learning Objectives:
1. How the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to state and local governments
2. Learn the importance of web accessibility for community members with disabilities and how some web designs may decrease accessibility
3. Tips on making web content accessible include how to read and follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
Speakers: Juan Carlos Acevedo, Kelly Holan, and Kelsi Stephenson
How to Participate: The event will take place live via Zoom Webinar. Participants will receive a Zoom join link on March 11.
CEUs: Event is approved for 0.1 CEUs and will only be awarded to members in live attendance for a minimum of 45 minutes (Continuing Education Units are for certifications such as CTRS, CPRE and CPRP certification).
